Under the Beams concert set for March 13

Under the Beams Concert Series is pleased to present Fareed Haque and the Flat Earth Ensemble on Saturday, March 13, at 8 pm at the Rapp-Owen Granary in New Harmony.
Guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque enjoys a career that spans the spectrum of musical styles. Along with his Flat Earth Ensemble, he successfully tackles the cross hybridization of Middle Eastern instruments and rhythms with mainstream jazz. Combining the traditional sounds of tabla, sitar, and Hindustani violin with jazz-inspired guitar and bass, as well as electric piano, the Ensemble bends tradition to the will of creativity, letting the music take on a life of its own. The resulting sound is a culmination of years of study and innovation blended with talented and fearlessly individualistic jazz musicians to create this lively jazz fusion with a world beat.
Moving easily between jazz and classical guitar, Fareed's versatility has created a demand for him with prominent jazz, rock, and classical artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Sting, and Paquito D'Rivera, among others. He has performed all of the major guitar concertos, is an active transcriber of baroque as well as South American music, and has had numerous modern works dedicated to him.
Born in 1963 to a Pakistani father and Chilean mother, Fareed’s extensive travels as a youth, especially long stays in Spain, France, Iran, Pakistan, and Chile, exposed him to a wide variety of music. This influenced his capacity and ability to bring forth his eclectic brand of music and has contributed to his wide popularity. He studied jazz at North Texas State University and classical music at Northwestern University in Chicago. He is a professor of jazz and classical guitar at Northern Illinois University.
This is the third concert of the Under the Beams season and will be followed by Corky Siegel and Chamber Blues on April 10, the final performance in this year’s series. These concerts offer musical excitement to concertgoers with diverse musical performances in this wonderful venue where every seat is a good seat.
General admission tickets for this concert are $28.00 and students are $15.00. For tickets and information, call our box office at 812-682-3128 or visit Events of Harmony, 527 Church Street, New Harmony. More information is available on Facebook or at
