Ben Cox

Ben Andy Cox, 52, went to be with the Lord on July 30, 2014. Ben was born May 20, 1962 the son of Hezekiah and Flora (Givens) Cox Sr.
Ben was what one would call a professional student. He loved learning and attending school whether it was through in class, or distant education courses. He obtained his degree in Computer Programming. Also he continued to study for his Funeral Director Degree. His learning did not stop there; he also wanted to continue study to be a Chef, and also a Social Worker. He truly took the saying ‘A mind is a terrible thing to waste,’ to heart. Ben was also active in high school, he was in various clubs, the choir, and also he was a part of the concert choir that auditioned every year between the three Posey County Schools. He was also a Thespian, Student Director, in the Student Race Relations, Pep Club, and an officer of D.E.C.A (Distributive Educational Clubs of America). During Ben’s Senior Year, he tried out in front of the whole student body, and was officially elected the first Varsity Male Cheerleader of Mount Vernon Sr. High School in 1981. One of the things Ben enjoyed most was in College, he sung with the Gospel group The Ebony Majestic Singers.
His church activities were numerous. Ben loved and cherished his walk with God. He received much joy from playing the piano and organ for the church and choir. He didn’t ask for monetary payment; for he knew that the Lord would make a way for him. He also sung solos in the church choir, and one of his and the congregation’s favorite song he sung was ‘I’ll Stand Until.’ He faithfully drove the van and bus for the Bus Ministry, was Secretary for the Pastor’s Wife committee, a part of the Pastor’s Aid, faithfully cleaned the church, Chairman of the Publication Committee, secretary of the youth department, the Brotherhood Department, and also acting Church Secretary. He filled in with many clerical positions at church, because of his love for God. Ben was also active in the Missionary Department for which he was secretary for a while. He was an excellent cook, and was part of the culinary staff; he was known for his homemade yeast rolls and his fried chicken.
He traveled with the church often. He also as much as he could, would attend the councils, and would participate in the Tri-State Youth Choir. He would also attend the Southern District Meetings, every year, on Saturday night, during the District Meeting; his Aunt Annie would have him render a solo; he sung with great joy and it showed. He attended Indiana State University Terre Haute, Ivy Tech, University of Southern Indiana and Vincennes University. He enjoyed playing the piano, organ and the saxophone.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Hezekiah Cox Sr. and Flora Cox Compton; step-dad, John Compton; brothers, Hezekiah Cox Jr. and Lynn Cox; sisters, Barbra Washington and Edna Quisenberry.
He is survived by sisters, Mary Cason, Elizabeth (Cookie) Lee, Kathryn Berry (David) Ridley, Ella Cox, Karen Price, and Gloria Cox; brothers, John Cox, James Cox, and Steven Cox; host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 4, 2014 at Schneider Funeral Home 512 Main Street, Mount Vernon, IN 47620.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a memorial fund for Ben Cox at Old National Bank to defray final expenses.
