Helen Houchins

Helen Yarbor Houchins, 97, of Griffin, Ind., died Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Ind. She was born February 2, 1917, near Keensburg, Ill., the daughter of Ona Woods Yarbor and William Richard Jackson Yarbor.
Helen was one of the original employees in 1949 of the old Griffin School lunch program until the school closed in the 1960s. She retired from North Elementary School in Poseyville, Ind., in 1982.
She was always an active member of her community; a lifelong member of the Christian Church, first in Mt. Carmel, Ill., then the Griffin Christian Church. She was a member for many years of the Bethel Belles Home-Economics Club, and the Friendship Club. She helped organize and assist with the Senior Citizens Center in Griffin, until it was moved to Poseyville. She was an avid gardener well into her nineties. She enjoyed quilts and made several for her children and grandchildren. She reserved most of her talent and enthusiasm for her Teddy Bears. She was a true Teddy Bear artist, remarking that when making one she expected the bear to say ‘ouch’ because they became so real to her during the creation process. Her bears were marketed under the name of HHouchins Bears. Her bears have homes throughout the United States and some have traveled internationally to England, Japan, Germany, and other far away places.
She is survived by daughter, Barbara Houchins (Norman) Conrey, son David (Glenda) Houchins, all of New Harmony, Ind.; grandchildren Michael (Gail) Conrey of Olney, Ill., Laura Conrey (Nick) Bohler of Poseyville, Patrick (Tammy) Conrey of New Harmony, Amy Conrey (Jason) Andreas of East Glacier Park, Mont., Missy Houchins (Bill) Hopf of Poseyville, Jon David (Missy) Houchins of Evansville, Julie Houchins Underwood Ferby of Lake Charles, La.; step grandchildren Kim Gambrel and Amy Rutledge; nine great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; brothers John Yarbor and Max Yarbor of Mt. Carmel.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents; husband for 58 years, Earl Houchins; brother Benjamin Yarbor; and sister Margarete Stewart.
Visitation is noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 2 at Cook Funeral Chapel in Grayville. Private graveside service will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Griffin following the visitation.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Pleasant Cemetery or Griffin Christian Church.
