Donald Edward Gunnels, 70, of Mount Vernon, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at his residence. He was born September 28, 1943 in White County, Ill., to Doice and Verla (Nibbling) Gunnels.
Donnie was a Vietnam Veteran stationed at Fort Carson, Colo. He was a Private First Class with an honorable discharge. Donnie was a member of the Pipefitters Local 136 and was a member of Eagles 1717 and American Legion Post 5. He had worked 47 years at Local 136 as a pipefitter and at B&W for a short time before retiring in 2000.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Doice (Buck) and Verla Gunnels; three brothers, Dallas, Bob, and Jerry Gunnels; three grandchildren, Karissa and Katy McKinney and Kaleb Talkington.
Donnie is survived by his wife, Janice Gunnels whom he married in 2003; three daughters, Kim Gunnels (Shawn) Slay, Penny Talkington, and Donna Gunnels (Rob) Grant; four step-children, Ronnie (Tonya) McKinney, Lance (Crystal) McKinney, Billy (Jodi) McKinney, and Amanda McKinney-Litchfield; 12 grandchildren, Jessie (Danial) Stephens, Jimi Talkington, Sammie McKinney, Laci Slay, Matt Slay, Kristopher and Conner McKinney, Nickie (Derrick) Eisele, Abbie McKinney, Jade and Kaylee Grant, Ryan Caddell; two great-grand children, Olivia Lipko-McKinney and Landi Slay.
The family would like to thank Southern Care Hospice for all they did for Donnie during his illness.
Funeral Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at Schneider Funeral Home, 512 Main Street, Mount Vernon, Ind., with burial to follow in Maple Ridge Cemetery in Carmi, Ill., with military rites.
Visitation was from 5 until 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2014 at the funeral home.
