Lady Cats defeat Buss, Mount Carmel in upset

The Mount Vernon girls’ basketball team is getting healthy and things are starting to finally click for the team. This week the girls’ came into their pair of Big Eight games with Mount Carmel and Vincennes Lincoln fighting as usual but also feeling good about welcoming back teammate
Alexis Nall who has missed several week’s with an injury. The team focused on these two formidable Big Eight Conference opponents and it paid off with a pair of wins over the Golden Aces and the Alices to gain two more conference wins.
Mount Carmel came into Thursday night’s game in Mount Vernon with an impressive record and only had felt the sting of defeat twice this season. Indiana University signee Tyra Buss was sure to put on a show and did not disappoint as she added 38 points for the visiting Aces. Buss is not easy to stop and Mount Vernon tried everything they could to stop her. But in the end she took over the game scoring the majority of her team’s points and seemingly doing whatever she wanted with the basketball.
Mount Carmel came out of the gate shooting and took a 20-17 lead into the second period of play feeling good about what they were doing despite not shooting the ball very well as a team.
But Mount Carmel would find out the hard way that the game of basketball is a team sport as Mount Vernon spread the ball around to find the basket and ended up outscoring the Aces 13-8 in the second period to take the halftime lead at 30-28.
Mount Vernon would stretch that lead in the third period of play as they held Mount Carmel to just seven third period points. The Wildcats took a 45-35 lead into the final period knowing that Mount Carmel would make another run.
And that is exactly what the Aces did. Buss and her team clawed their way back into the game and with just 1:20 left in the contest…
