William Scherer

William David Scherer (Bill Scherer) passed away on December 31, 2013, following a valiant struggle with pancreatic cancer. He died peacefully and immersed in love from his family and Christ while in his home in Mount Jackson, Virginia.
Bill was born on November 5, 1941 in Posey County, Indiana, where he lived until he graduated from Evansville College in 1963. He married Gail (Wildt) Scherer in 1964 and moved to Indianapolis. He had careers as an engineer for the Department of Defense, as a financial manager at Indiana Bell and AT&T, and as a financial planner for Waddell and Reed before retiring in 2004.
That same year he moved to Mount Jackson, Virginia to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He and Gail bought and renovated a historic house built in 1830. Together they landscaped the yard with gardens, trees, and flower beds, and lovingly decorated the house with antiques purchased from local vendors.
During his 63 years in Indiana, Bill was a founding member of Indian Creek Christian Church in Franklin Township and served as a church elder and leader for over 20 years. He was also a member of the Township School Board and was very active in the community. Bill grew up on a farm in Posey County and enjoyed volunteering to help friends during planting and harvest seasons in the Indianapolis area throughout his adult life. He also loved antiquing and never missed a significant event in the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Along with Gail, his wife of 49 years, Bill is survived by two children, six grandchildren, and his mother-in-law, Iona Wildt. Bill’s son Trent lives in Arlington, Va., with wife Melissa and children Zeke and Zara. His daughter Tara lives in Quicksburg, Va., with husband Bill and children Liam, Iona, Karis, and Maira.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Margaret Scherer and by his firstborn child Todd.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at the Wakeman’s Grove Church of the Brethren in Edinburg, Va., at 4 p.m. on January 5, 2014. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. and a reception will follow at 5 p.m. A separate service will be held at Indian Creek Christian Church in Indianapolis at 2 p.m. on January 19, 2014, with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to one of the following: SEARCH (PO Box 1147, Mount Jackson, Va 22842), Coracle of Quicksburg (http://www.coracle.org/), or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (http://www.pancan.org/). Bill served on the Board of Directors of both SEARCH and Coracle.
